  1. I’ve had quite a bit to do with overseas aid organizations. They realized long ago that just giving did not raise living standards, or for that matter instill in the receiver a will to put out effort and strive to live the best quality life possible. So they changed directions. Now they go to a community and working with them find out how they feel they could improve their own lives. Then responding to that the aid organization works with the community on village betterment programs such as good water supply, teaching skills like bicycle repair, how to manage funds loaned to them for simple projects such as owning a cow or goat, how to sew. They then repay the loans from profits over time. That way they have pride in their achievements and did not have the low feeling of self worth that comes from receiving constant handouts. The aid organization then exits the scene and the community carries on with head held high. Now I do concede there are some who are incapable of looking after themselves and we have some responsibility for them. But they are really a small minority. Government handouts indiscriminately just to get votes actually destroy a society.
